DIRK SUTRO is the author of Jazz for Dummies, as well as two books on architecture: West Coast Wave: New California Houses, and From Missions to Modern, a guide to San Diego architecture. From 1999 through 2004, he hosted The Lounge, a nightly arts and culture program on KPBS-FM public radio in San Diego. Earlier, he was editor of San Diego Home/Garden magazine, and wrote weekly columns on architecture and jazz for the San Diego edition of the Los Angeles Times. He is currently at work on projects for print, radio and internet. He is represented by Sally Van Haitsma with the Castiglia Agency.
Jazz for Dummies, second edition, released July 5, 2006, is a completely overhauled version of the original, which came out in 1998 and became one of the most popular basic primers on jazz. This new volume is superior in every way, from comprehensive chapters on the history of jazz (New Orleans to bebop to free) to new sections on building a collection, throwing a jazz dinner party, hitting the clubs, and best cities for jazz. Bird, Diz, Monk, Trane, Miles, Hawk, Bean--they're all here, along with a new crew from the current generation. Jazz for Dummies is available now from www.amazon.com
